Hi. Just downloaded free AVG and uninstalled Norton, which was slowing everything down to a snail's pace. Just wondered how I know whether or not it's actually working OK, without all those messages and stuff I used to get with Norton; is there any way of checking? Thanks in advance for any help.

Uninstall it and download Avast free.

Click on the AVG icon on your desktop, it'll show what is /isn't working.

Thanks for the replies, folks (Hello again, Scruff) Seems it didn't download properly the first time, which was why there was no icon the desktop. Seems OK now though. Thanks again.

I found AVG free slowed my computer down nearly as bad as Norton, or should I say I didn't half notice the difference when I uninstalled it.

AVG is much better than Norton, Avast is better still, at least in the speed stakes.

Each to their own I guess, when I first did a scan with AVG it picked up loads of stuff that Norton had missed...

...At least we agree that Norton is crap..

i have super anti spyware and avg got rid off norton as it slowed down the computer 'all free versions
never have any problems they just find the odd "adult" tracking cookie

Agreed since AVG 8.5 slowed my pc down and heard rave reviews on Avast I soon changed, never looked back....

Just a word of advice to anyone removing Norton, always use the Norton Removal Tool to remove all traces of any Norton product.

And everyone has their own opinion of which free antivirus software is best so, as they are free, try any of them and run it for a week or so and see how your computer performs. If not happy, uninstall it and try another one. Only ever have ONE Antivirus program running at any one time.

The correct procedure is to download the new program that you wish to try, and save to desktop or download folder.
If removing AVG, download the AVG Removal Tool and save to desktop or download folder.
Disconnect from the internet and, using Task Manager, (Ctrl+Alt+Del in XP or Ctrl+Shift+Esc in Vista and Win7) and click on the running program and select End Process.
Then uninstall the old antivirus program that you have installed, either using the Removal Tool or it's own uninstaller from Control Panel -> Programs -> select it and click Uninstall at the top of the list.
Install your new AV software and connect to the internet again and check for updates.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials on this desktop but use Comodo Security Premium and Windows Defender on the laptop.
Both computers also have SAS and MBAM installed for weekly checks.

HI there dave.m i was reading this post , i find anti viruses slow aswell. And i have not had any protection on my pc for ages ,though i have downloaded them from time to time, only to uninstall them. (so) After reading your post i have downloaded the norton remover tool and have removed it.

I have also downloaded the driver scanner tool,though i have not run it yet as im not sure what to do next should i download the avg remover tool as i have used the avg before.....erm i am trying what you have advised ,so i can get the avg or some sort of anti virus.

Don't use the driver scanner, uninstall it. Any driver updates will normally be done with Microsoft updates or the program itself will update its own drivers.

For peace of mind and ease of use, download and install Microsoft Security Essentials. Click download button, then on the second window select which operating system (Windows XP, Vista or Win7 and the 32bit or 64bit) you have.

Once installed open it and click the Update Tab and click the Update button.
In the Settings Tab, set the schedule scanner to perform a Quick Scan once a week, when your computer is usually turned on and you are not using it for 10 minutes, and set the CPU usage to 50%.

Job done.

Get yourself these two malware and spyware scanners:
Malwarebytes
And
SuperAntiSpyware Use red button for free version.
Once a week, open one and click to update it and then click to run a quick scan.
About 3 days later, do the same thing with the other one, so that you are well covered incase any malware or spyware gets passed Microsoft SE.
The MBAM takes about 3 to 4 minutes to run a quick scan and the SAS usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes to scan but you can carry on using the computer whilst they are running a scan.

Which operating system (Windows) are you using?

After installing MSE as above, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Firewall and just make sure it is turned on.
