Does Windows start to load then error? How far does the boot process get and what error messages do you get if any? As a start you could try to load in Safe Mode. Keep pressing F8 during after the BIOS has initialised and choose Safe Mode from the list of options.

Gets as far as the windows pic then starts again, and repeats.

Not sure it has a safe mode Rich.

It will have safe mode. Just keep tapping F8 (don't hold it down continuously) after the BIOS screen. If you can get safe mode to load it might be possible to disable Avast.

Sorted :thumbright:

Thanks Rich, it would seem my Amstrad 64  is not compatible with the latest version of Avast.

Maybe worth noting, if anyone has XP 2nd addition or older.

Incidentally, I down loaded the 2nd latest version from Filehippo and it seems fine

So the problem started when you installed XP SP2? Do you get the same problem as before, i.e. no error messages, but Windows auto restarts when it starts loading? You could boot from the XP CD and repair the installation:

Boot from XP CD
Press ENTER when you see the message to setup Windows XP now, and press ENTER on the Welcome to Setup screen
Don't press R to use the Recovery Console
At the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the agreement
Select the current Windows XP installation and then press R to repair Windows

Yes Rich, this time the problem is SP2.

The previous problem was avast, which I un-installed and re-installed and was working fine

You'd think I would have chickened out after the first nightmare. Some people never learn and all that.

XP disc may be a problem as it was built into the machine, must try and find what came with it.
