|
|
|
| Furniture is causing indentations in the asphalt of my 5Mx3M balcony. Due to a low door cill, protection by timber decking is not practical. I have read that ceramic tiles are not advisable over asphalt. I have researched a number of promenade tiles, but am concerned that the ungrouted expansion gaps will fill with dirt and water and could freeze/thaw and heave. Has anyone experience of these or able to suggest a way of protecting the asphalt? |

I'll move this to the tiling section as Mudster will probably know the answer to this one _________________ DIY | DIY Video |

The asphalt isn't a problem per se, it's generally what's underneath that.
Anyhow, if it were tiled it would also be grouted.
This is one of those jobs that sounds simple but to do properly is a complete refit from substrate onwards. _________________

I have a similar problem; I have opened up 3 rooms into 1. The original room has original red quarry tiles, sat on red sand and they allow the damp to come through. The other two rooms are previous extensions to the house with concrete floors that are not damp. The original house walls were never removed and so looked a bit of a mess. Now I have removed the walls & replaced with RSJs, but have 3 slightly different levels of floor. I want to put down ceramic tiles, but need a level and to be damp proof - So i thought "Asphalt". The total area of floor is just over 34 sq metres, and the quote was £750!!!
Is this a fair price for a good quality asphalt contractor? _________________ ... and my Wife thought that renovating an old house would be romantic and a project we could both work on.... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! |

Mudster Can you help me?
I now have my asphaslt floor in my kitchen and have the dilemma of what goes on next. The man that sells linoleum reckons that I must now have a screed on top of the asphalt to stop the "black" coming through for ceramic tiles and even lino. Is this true?
Why can't you put tiles straight onto asphalt? _________________ ... and my Wife thought that renovating an old house would be romantic and a project we could both work on.... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! |

You can tile on asphalt.
Off the top of my head BAL rapidflex grey would fine.
Not sure why you've been advised otherwise. _________________

Cheers Mudster.
I reckon the lino man wanted me to buy the lot from him, including the "special" screed....
The ashpalt floor is great, so this week, I'll be buying the the floor tiles and then tiling direct onto the asphalt - using the BAL sutff you mentioned as adhesive.
As a side note, the floor is 34 sq metres, and the asphalt cost £710.
I'll be in touch if I have any more dramas. _________________ ... and my Wife thought that renovating an old house would be romantic and a project we could both work on.... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! |
