Ey up folks,
I am looking at plastering a ceiling which has got artex on it at the moment. Having read a lot on this forum about the dangers of this stuff (asbestos) & how hard it is to shift! I was just thinking about skimming over it but the peaks of the artex are quite big so wondered if I should maybe put a thin coat of bonding on first & then skim it? Just wondered if there is any reason not to do this? or should I just scrape the peaks off? I don't know if this particular artex will contain asbestos but don't fancy risking it...........advice is more than welcome...... _________________ It's a dirty horse but someone's got to ride it |

You can put a coat of bonding on first (pva the artex first) then skim on top of the bonding. It's not worth the risk of knocking off the peaks as it could contain asbestos.
You'll probably get a few people replying to this saying that they have sawn, drilled or eaten asbestos in the past and that they are still alive, but it can take 20 years for the adverse effects to show
Better safe then sorry _________________ DIY | DIY Video |

| Or double board mate, just as quick as bonding it, then nice and flat for skimming |

I scraped Artex of a ceiling softened by steaming. The surface goes gooey but it is powdery underneath. Now I knew that the stuff up was asbestos free as I asked the bloke who did it. In retrospect t was pointless stripping off as it was plastered over in teh same way as UHM suggests.
Rub a brick over it to take the high points of and plaster over.

| What i got to take high spots off if you know artex is ok, is a floor scraper which is on a pole, just walk along with it, easy, do a room in minutes, £13 had mine for years www.screwfix.com |

Hi Big D,
DO NOT attempt to scrape or sand the artex, as you have heard it could contain asbestos.
I would just overboard it, if you find the peaks are to big then you could always use foam backed p/board which will take up any of the stipple.
Alternatively you could have a sample of the artex tested.
1 wear a P3 mask
2 scrape a small amount from different areas of the ceiling when i say small i mean smaller than fingernail size and put this into a resealable air tight bag label it with details such as location, material type, date and your name.
3 contact your local asbestos firm and ask them who they use for asbestos testing ( we use a company called Vintec based in Watford) sample costs about 15-20 pound
Note: you only need a very small amount ie fingernail area in total.
hope this helps _________________ What was the best thing before sliced bread? |

Thanks for all the advice fella's, it's much appreciated. I will defo either put a layer of bonding on or as suggested use the foam backed plaster board as it's really old artex so there's a good chance it has asbestos in it!
Leebwk - out of interest how long does it normally take for the testing companies to come back to you with an answer on whether it contains asbestos or not?
Can you buy the foam backed PB from the usual places or is it a specialist shop i need?
Many thanks _________________ It's a dirty horse but someone's got to ride it |
