Hi Guys
need some advice on building a stand for a 6x2x2 foot glass fish tank my inital idea was breeze blocks with 3 or 4 fence posts running verticle to support the tank on (see pants drawing)
originally i was going to have a 5x2x2 tank underneath but this is now a 6x2x2 aswell so the breeze blocks will be 6 feet apart?
Image
my question is would metal be better?
ive been looking but dont know what im looking for?
if so what sort of metal beams would i need how many and where can i get them for a good price?
Thanks

Hi Gav, and :welcome:

I cannot help you with the questions but, for anyone giving advice, bear in mind that each tank, if full, will contain 1,500lb of water before the weight of glass and frame is taken into consideration.

Id be converned about what you are putting it all on, youll have about 1.5tonnes (weight of a family car) all sat in one small area.... solid concrete floor?

Steel would be fine, plonked on a nice stack of blocks. Boxed in so it looks half nice..... :thumbright:

As you only want a few short pieces, try a local steel fabricators...check this list out-
http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/metal-suppliers.htm

Id look at SHS, or box section as its better known..... 3 pieces going across, id think 50x50x3 should be man enough. Its an even load.

We regularly make tank stands for a local fish farm, they are all 50x50 shs.

Erm...
1 ton = 2240 lb
1 tonne = 2204 lb.

so, 1500 lb = 3/4 tonne
