Hi,

Short & sweet question for a change... Need to order some parts.

Best size (depth) galvanised back boxes for power sockets, fused connection unit, data grids, light switches?

Best size (width) galvanised capping for two x 2.5mmsq T&E for power, one x 2.5mmsq for spurs, two x 1.0mmsq for 2-gang lighting?

Should back boxes now be fitted with grommets after punch-out?

Thanks,

Ric

Nothing less than 25 mm for backboxes.

50 mm for capping over 2 x 2.5 t/e

Grommets are not a requirement to BS7671 but are good practice, all decent sparkys fit them.

be careful when deciding which boxes to use though, if you use the deep ones there is a chance you will knock the bricks right through if you are not used to chopping them out.

fully agree with IDBI on the grommets, use them cos you would be surprised how many people cut through the insulation when they cram the socket fronts back on Bang Head

capping, i never use the stuff myself, i find it dam annoying. it gives a week spot for plaster, it doesn't protect the cables from anything other than a plasterer hitting the cables with a trowel. that is the only reason it was used on building sites.

lol Rich - know what you mean about capping or is the blooming capping nails that are the problem? I HATE capping nails and don't use them I prefer to use galv clout nails. Actually I prefer not to use capping at all and hardly do these days spreads are OK at doing their job generally speaking.

You use cable clips-

Hammer them into the mortar and not the brick Wink

What a good idea UHM. And all these years I've been trapping cables under the heads of clout nails...

Twit - I was referring to the fixing of capping.

Do you ever offer any serious and correct answers Stoday or is it permanent one-upmanship with you at all times?
