I thought it was a Ford Model T type bu it is not a Ford as the car shown has two independent cart springs at the front. Fords had one transverse spring at this time. It is a shame the grille is covered as this would help.

Thanks for replying. It's the only picture that we have sadly and we know nothing about cars of that era. The family were wealthy with servants and all the sons were officers in the forces, so we're thinking not a mass market car!

Well, Louise, the bike is a Zenith V-Twin.
Here is a brother to your bike with a sidecar - the good old combination
Re the car - are you sure it was a private car and not a military one? It has all the signs of a military one with the very dull paint finish and masked headlamps - and of course the soldier boy sitting on the front
Not sure if they did much "anti airraid" type blackout stuff in the first world war, you see

Hoovie,
Snap! That's good! Thanks. On the back of the photo we have 1918 and we were assured that it was a private car but as I've no idea I'm open to any suggestions. It's my oh's ancestor related to the ex-pm!

The key things that will ID the car are the springs and I think the funny mudguards with like a double- guard arrangement.
The grill and bonnet shape has the look of a Bentley a bit to me - that honeycomb style... You said they were rich, so that is possible, I suppose.

According to oh, Bentley were making aircraft engines around then, so probably not a Bentley car. I've looked at images on google but I keep getting Fords!
Is that a Mobil Oil can?

Have a look at this website - and maybe send them a link to the pic and ask if anyone recognises it

The car, my guess is a Vauxhall, lights that far forward, wire wheels...

Quite right - they designed their first proper car in 1919
Maybe a Prince Henry then? That was a real nobs car of the time
here is a Vauxhall Princeton - bit too late for 1918, but similar features (the springs, sidelights mounted on mudguards, bonnet shape)

Hoovie,
Thanks for the link. I've just e-mailed them a photo to see if they can identify it.
Hitch my oh has just suggested that Vauxhall may be an option, although I've no idea how long they've been around.

That's a good car, very stylish! You know how family legends are far from the truth, I bet it's a staff car! They were wealthy though! Bl**dy shame it didn't pass down the generations.

Vauxhall is a very old make and was very up market at one time.
My first car was a Vauxhall Viva actually (so obvioulsy AFTER they went down market big time)

I think my grandad had one at one time, I just sat in the back and it went from A to B, all that I needed to know at the time! I like our Astra, it also goes from A to B, but an Aston Martin would do it better and with more style!
