Are animal snares illegal? Someone just freecycled that they want some or instructions to make some?

I think they are here. You still see a fair few about though.
Depends what you want to kill or catch, there probably a better way.

I thought they were banned but I've just read two conflicting reports, so not sure.

It's legal.

Or it was when I was a kid in the 1940's and my dad set snares to catch rabbits, which we ate.

Then there was myxomatosis in the 1950's, which killed off most of the rabbit population. I haven't eaten rabbit since then. I can remember seeing one rabbit with myxo with great lumps growing out of its head. It was moving towards a fox, which was backing away. The fox was scared of that rabbit. You don't forget seeing something as unusual as that very quickly.

Blu,

I 'think' I remember hearing that all snares should now be 'stop snares' which have a lump in the wire that stops the snare cutting all the way to the bone.

Also I'm pretty sure they need to be tagged so the person who set them can be contacted.

Either way I think they are evil things and I cut them if I ever come across them in the wild.

If you want rid of something that bad, put the effort in to stay up or hunt it down and shoot the ****er

It was a local Freecycler wanting to either get one or instructions for one.
I read something about ensuring that they don't injure badgers, but any animal could get trapped.

Slug

I think you're getting mixed up with latching type snares, which act like cable ties. They ratchet up and won't release. Nasty, because an animal may trap a leg instead of its neck. If it traps a leg it can release itself from a non-latching snare but not the latching type. Foxes will gnaw off their leg to escape.

My dad wouldn't use latching snares. But he taught me how to make and set snares to catch rabbits. (It's a long time since though).

If anyone's interested, I'll post how to make and set rabbit snares.

Stods,

Those are the one I'm thinking of - evil things

I've shot a few three legged or lame critters in my time and I've always wondered if those snares are to blame.

Sorry for miss-leading you Blu

reckon you are right, Slugster - Snares are evil and the people who set them are worse!!

Here is some video of some snare-setters being dealt with by the law!

Snaring rabbits and foxes is NOT illegal.

On its web site, the National Anti Snaring Campaign says "It is legal in Britain to use free-running snares to control rabbits and foxes".
If it were illegal, I'm sure they would say so.

Slugster didn't say that Hoovie. I think it's disingenuous of you to attribute your views to others. It suggests you feel them to be invalid. Slug just said he thought all typs of snare were evil and said nothing about people who set them.

Some people think cats are evil. But it's illogical for them to say that cat owners are even more evil. See? You turned Slug's reasonable opinion into a diatribe.

Do this again and I'll report you to a Moderator for not being nice.
