Today, at age 65 I came nearer to having a brawl than I have done since I grew up forty odd years ago. Was shopping with a younger lady friend at local mall. She likes charity shops and also had some grocery stuff to get in Asda, I was tagging along to get a lift, carry bags and get some bits and pieces. Not particularly busy or crowded, we crossed the flow to get to a shop, was delayed at door by a lady with a trolley, someone said, 'excuse me sir' in background which had nowt to do with me so I ignored it as was waiting politely for trolley lady to clear door but lass i was with, called my name so as she was behind me i turned and these two guys, one in a white shirt looking vaguely official and another big beefy guy stepped up to me and beefy guy just said 'I heard what you said'. I thought the excuse me sir bit was because I was blocking door and didn't focus but he stepped right into my space and repeated it. I said something like 'what are you going on about?'. He repeated and I said he was wrong I hadn't said anything, I had no idea what he was going on about. He then said something about he heard me and I said well he hadn't and the lass I was with chipped in that I hadn't said anything to anyone. He ignored her and then told me to leave the mall! I asked him who he thought he was and what was his problem, I was just shopping and had no idea what he meant and wasn't going to leave until he explained. he said he was security and was asking me to leave for causing a disturbance. I didn't raise my voice but didn't back off and repeated I wanted to know on what grounds. He ignored me and just said 'leave or I have the right to remove you' and stepped right up to me. I took out my phone camera and said 'I will leave when I get a photo of your security tag as you are being ridiculous'. He put his hand over his tag and told me again to leave. His off-sider stood next to me at the time but said nothing at all. The lass said 'just leave, he's looking for trouble' or something and I decided OK. We walked off with them two or three feet behind. I saw a community Policeman at Asda doorway and approached him and asked for help and advise, told him the story but he said 'let's take it outside'. I said not particularly willing as I wanted to shop in Asda and did the guy have the right? He just said 'lets go out and discuss'. So we went a few feet past entrance to a less busy part to one side of people/edge of carpark. The security guys stood about ten feet away so I told story to community cop and he said best thing was just calm down and go. He wouldn't confirm they had the right or not but by this time I had three security guys triangling around me at about ten foot or less, saying nothing. I was getting irate I admit but still didn't swear and wasn't even shouting if a bit intense. I said to copper look I am retired and shopping, haven't even spoken to a cop since I was 17 and apart from a speeding fine recently have had no business with law and wanted his advise as I wanted to go back in and do my shopping. Was it a public place or not? I then realised the lass was pale and shaking and crying and so said to copper Ok we will just go but that I would not leave it there as I was not going to be intimidated or threatened and I was not letting them get away with upsetting a decent lass who had never said boo to a goose about anything. She pulled at me and said 'just go, they're getting closer', she was shaking and the nasty security guy by now was standing two foot away from her and facing me. I told him he didn't scare me and if he thought he could get away with bullying I would sue. Well I have never employed a solicitor for anything other than buying a house but I thought it sounded good. I pointed out we had an appointment in a store tomorrow and I wanted to come back for that let alone in future for shopping. The copper said the management of Mall top bloke was called George and we should ring him but he thought we should leave for now. I made a final comment about how did he feel with these guys pushing in on his conversation with a member of the public and we went.

Ok so lass was in a panic, shaking and trembling jaw and pale, she is a professional lass never even had a fight with a schoolmate, she felt thoroughly frightened and couldn't drive well straight off, I had to calm her as we were in busy traffic getting out of Mall.

When back at her home she had a good old cuppa and went over it and praised me for being calm and supportive. She was almost in shock but soon rallied and was really quite angry. She said she hated confrontation and was really scared of the guys but was scared for me but truly didn't think I had been rude or over re-active. She called Mall management 'George' from internet search for Mall, stated story and circumstances and they said nowt to do with them but would look into it. Well that's it at present but what is this? Some guy with a name tag, not anything like badge saying security can manhandle you off a Mall if he misheard or imagined you said something? And he was certainly trying to intimidate us and stood a foot from me right in my space and tried to bully me. Nothing conciliatory or explanatory at all - except when he butted in on conversation with the cop when he said he had a duty to protect children and families from abusive people like me.

Funnily enough I was annoyed rather than upset except when he looked as if he was going to grab me and at first I was even a bit dismissive as I genuinely had no idea what was going on, then firm with him about wanting an explanation, had stood my ground at first but didn't even raise my voice much.

I am now angry! Will follow up with Mall and the shops we use a lot - but is this for real, they have that power? Comments? Any similar occurrences? Thanks for reading.

:dunno: Can't say I've ever had an issue such as you describe Jape... I would certainly be asking "George" for a full explanation/enquiry.. They will almost certainly have CCTV of the incident (With or without audio) and should be able to ask the security guards for a statement as to what they heard/thought they heard.

Definitely time to stand up for yourself though and insist on an investigation.

A typical case of give an idiot a uniform and they become power drunk.

I can understand how angry you are/were but my advice to you is to let it go as there is nowhere really to go with it. The security chumps will close ranks and lie to protect their jobs and the Police are just a likely to end up giving you a caution for disturbing the peace. Giving bad publicity is the best damage you can do and the local rag would love a story like this and it is unlikely the management firm would give any rebuttal other than sack the tossers. However, I suspect you would want to keep your anonymity and you would not want your picture plastered across the local paper in one of those silly posed pictures they love so much.

Good luck whatever you do.

DWD

Some tit on a power trip, bored with nothing else to do than harass people, they have no powers, if it was a bod from a shop he can only escort you from there premises only if it was mall security they can escort you from there premises as its classed as private property if he touched you its classed as assault if it ever happens again ask what section of the Pace act there acting under, SIA licence or id should be clearly on display

Get the name of the company, the idiot, time and date and report it to the SIA

For my sin's I was a security guard for 3 years (non retail) - it paid the bills

Thanks all. No response yet; well we've decided to give them Monday and Tues a.m to respond then just write letter to Mall management and copies to stores we use therein. Then I shall let it go, my male ego can wear the knock and the lass is scared the a'hole will get her car number and address and frighten her or something. She has an appt. in Mall tomorrow and was scared to go but is gutsy enough to go without me now she has faced it and reported it. Probably best in short term. She is going to just walk away if she sees him or if he approaches her and go into any closest store and ask for Police to be called or use her mobile with witnesses - and if he touches her at all she will go straight to Police and press charges. Thanks for the comment about SIA flash22, I didn't even know of them and will add a letter copy to them for their information. lass is worried if he loses his job or is warned he an dothers will come after us but agrees with me you cannot allow such fear to make you run. I wish it were all simpler but some people are just idiots and bullies and you have to face them.

The lass sent careful business-like letters to Mall HQ, to SIA and to a number of stores we use regularly. Two weeks and no response from any. Makes me sick.

May be completely irelevant here but I've used our local councillors a couple of times where we've had issues (nothing like your issue though). They've been very helpful and ours run an open house every month where you can just turn up and have a whinge. A letter to the Mall from a councillor concerned about the treatment their voter - sorry, local resident may help.

otoh of course the Mall management may be all councillors!!

couple of lads i know do security on eldon square shopping mall in newcastle. they have a uniform and are clearly labeled as security with those yellow things theyve all got to wear on their right arms so theyre identifiable in a disturbance.

FFS

Agree with DWD, a knuckle dragger on a power trip, likely knowing he can get away with it as his management processes will probably back him up. Glad to read nothing serious happened and hope someone has the courtesy to respond.

I've not personally experienced it, but photographers can get all sorts of crap from security firms and plod who don't know better. Usually involves shooting a building / location from public land but being asked not to, typically citing anti terrorism concerns. Obviously common sense and courtesy should always be exercised in such circumstances but I've read many stories on photographers being physically threatened.

Well you may as well cut me off once and for all then, as when such a w*nker constantly gets away with it, deliberately stirring trouble in an old thread like this and others then you are failing. Other long term members commented on Argyll's attitude privately in support of me. He will feel a momentary surge of self-aggrandisment and maybe get a pleasurable crotch stain. cya later folks.

You left me no choice Jape.

@ Argyll that doesn't mean you aren't next. Wind your neck in.
