I saw an amazon echo (not the dot) being used in a house the other day (Friend of friend, and no time to ask) it seemed really clever, reviews seem ok , but my question is have you got one, and what do you think of it? (I was looking at buying the dot)

one of my mates has bought one for his new house. hes moved in with his fella.

another of my mates called round for a few cans. they were messing on asking it about all sorts. my mate pipes up.... alexa... can you order me a butt plug?

alexa replied no. however from your recent order history would you like to order some more lube?

We were gifted one of the larger versions last Christmas and after the novelty wore off (about 2 hours) it's been relegated to Jo's office so she can request radio/music etc whilst working.

The TV ads are really misleading as they show functionality that requires additional interfaces (like lights on/off etc) but they don't mention the fact.

Thanks to both of you. :thumbright:

I figured even something from Amazon could not turn lights etc off without additional hardware, but as you say Kellys_eye the ads are some what mis-leading.

I have the Google equivalent, the "Google Home". It's reasonably useful -- "Is it going to rain today?", "What is the traffic like to Basingstoke?", "When was Sgt. Pepper's Loney Hearts Club Band Released?", etc. etc. If you have a Google Play Music subscription, you can just ask it to play a particular song or album and away it goes.

I've had it for a couple of months, and probably still ask it maybe 3 or 4 questions a week. It's a reasonable quality bluetooth speaker too. I am marginally concerned about whether it can be used to nefariously listen in or log conversations it can hear (the speech recognition is absolutely amazing -- it's seldom even fazed by my selection of comedy regional accents) but as 99% of everything I say is complete rubbish anyway, it doesn't worry me all that much.

Oh, and it also works with the Nest thermostat, so I can turn the heating off and on without having to go through the tiresome, energy-sapping, rigmarole of prodding at my mobile phone screen now :-)
