|

|
Hello everyone,
I am brand new to this site so please be gentle with me.
Can anyone advise me on how to make my cupboard door spring close again properly? It partially closes on the in-built spring but stops half an inch before it is properly shut.
The hinges are made by Blum or iblum (I can't quite make out the name) and are 12 years old.
Thanks |

Sometimes one of the hinge springs split and it loses the closing power. Take the door off and test the hinges first. Check as you open and close the hinge and you should feel the tension build and it snaps into close. It will be fairly obvious if it does not. You can get Blum replacement hinges easy enough or swap one from a lesser used smaller door for time being.
It is unlikely that it is an adjustment issue but check that all the screws are tight to the door and carcase fitting.

| Thanks for your prompt reply. I've got 2 doors with this problem; can anyone tell me how to re-adjust them as it's probably unlikely that both springs have broken, or is it? |

Well, it might be one of the adjustments but I still think it is a closure spring issue.
The fitting on the carcase allows the hinge mount to move in and out and up and down. This allows you to ensure the door closes flush on and meets the top and bottom edges. The screws on the hinge arms act in concert and it allows you to bring the door up or down on the hinge axis which lifts the top edge up or down to make it sit square.
Start with basics as it is very hard to get these settings right by playing.
Hinges do go but Blum are a good make and not as prone to failure as similar Bnq types.
Have a good look at the mountings first.

Have a look at this link (he says fingers crossed)
It shows how to adjust them, take your time and only move one screw at a time.
Or you might end up like the rest of us with a few loose
