Hi

I am changing a ceiling light on the ground floor in my house, removed old light and found out no Earth, only Live (red) and Neutral (black) wire. I took the floorboards out, on the first floor and located the wire where I can pull it out easily, please see photo and it is the white wire.
Now, I want to add earth so just need confirmation with what I am planning to do is safe wiring:
I will pull the existing wire out on the first floor and put the L and N in a junction box. Add earth wire from a source nearby and connect it in the Earth junction box. Then a new 1.0 mm twin core plus earth cable, connect to L , N and E of the junction and the other end feed through the plaster board to my new ceiling light. Job done?!

Does your new light actually need an earth?

Any J/Bs need to be accessible unless maintenance free.

How old is your consumer unit...

Yes the new light has metal and has earth terminal plus L and N. It is not class 2 double insulated.

Sorry what are J/Bs?

They are maintenance free but also accessible as floorboards easily unscrewed as and when required.

No comments on my wiring to add the earth ....etc so assume it is all safe.

How will you test if this earth you connect to is actually an earth?
Its sounds like you may be due a re wire, as some one has only changed the CU

The new Earth cable will be taken from a nearby available source and necessary tests will be done.
