Chez,

You're the exercise expert on here, so this is aimed at you. I'm power walking almost 5 miles a day with the dog, brisk dog speed, to get fitter and to tighten everything up, it takes about 75 minutes. This is on top of everything e I'm suffering with aching muscles, gluteal muscles mainly! I want to know if there's a muscle rub that you'd advise. I know you should rest muscles but I don't want to stop as I'm getting into a routine now, unless it's stormy, then I'm on the exercise bike or gravity strider. Suggestions please.

Hitch,

 Is that a charity suggestion? I'm aiming for buns of steel!! The things I do in the name of charity. I already have an offer from the other half but CSI is on!! I don't use muscle rub but I wondered if that'd ease the ache! I just want to power walk my 5km since running is out of the question.

Try some stretching to get rid of the acid out of your muscles,
and I think most of the aches means its working, like the saying No pain No gain

doomed

I walk in my walking shoes then find that if I put my 3" high boots on the aching eases! Weird as it is, it works! If I keep the flatter walking shoes on it's ache city. I'm working on the principle that "Pain is good".

Doomed,

The next morning is the bad bit, I'd rather curl up in bed. I'm just working through the pain and I feel virtuous every morning. Amazing what a brisk walk can do.

Much better today. Apparently the pain is caused by tiny tears in the muscles!

aching is normal, but pain is your bodys way of telling you that something is wrong. Do not underestimate the importance of stretching/warming up, you could try doing yoga (plenty of free dvds on the web if you know where to look) along side your walking, good luck :thumbright:

like the guys have said stretching and warm up is vital, I always find it funny that everyone will stretch and warm down in the gym, but hardly see anyone stretch after a decent swim.

you think Chez is the expert on here for aching muscles  he isn't old enough to get that feeling.

as the two above have said, it is all down to stretching.

this is how it works: -

Monday you do your 1st brisk walk. a bit uphill n a bit downhill.
Tuesday you fell knackered and i little tight
Wednesday you hurt like hell
that lasts for about 3-4 days or until you walk again.

how to stop it: -

Monday, do some controlled on the spot excercise followed by 10 mins stretching. do the walk and then another 10 mins stretching afterwards.

Tuesday, wak up and do some stretching for 10 mins.
Tuesday night do another 10 mins stretching
Wednesday, go for another walk.
Thursday - it doesn't hurt anymore.

then when you increase the speed or distance you will need to do the latter half again because your muscles will have been strained again.

you should stretch every time before you start. the least you should do is warm up.

daily it is worth taking Cod liver oil + Omega 3 tablets and/ glucosimine (no idea how to spell that)
this will help your joints and prevent the numbness or joint ache in general. it will definitely help your ankle joint.

before you walk make sure you have eaten sufficient carbs to give you the energy to do so. if you exercise on a low body energy it hurts you more and makes you feel sick.
