Please help me guys.....

This isn’t a “Tie me up and beat me” thread. Sorry if I’ve attracted the wrong audience!

I’m trying to paint my garage door and surround. The door is wooden and the frame is metal.
A simple task you may think? Err no, not for me.

I want to paint it dark grey in a satin finish. So far I’ve put around 6 coats on the blo^^y thing and I’m no closer to my goal!

Coat 1. Dulux dark grey exterior undercoat. Perfect.
Coat 2. Sandtex. Seclusion....too light.
Coat 3. 2nd coat of the above. Still too light.
Coat 4. A bespoke mix from B&Q of Vespar custom coloured paint. Awful
Coat 5. Another coat of the above. Still awful.
Coat 6. Rustoleum dark grey. Perfect colour. Too shiny.

Could someone please put me out of my misery? I want a dark grey like a battleship, a war plane or like a “dark grey garage door”

Thanks in advance

I honestly wouldn't know which paint will give you what you want. Colour is very subjective anyway.

You do realise though, that it's going to look a different shade depending on the ambient light though?
North facing will look subtly different to South facing. It'll look different in midday conditions, a Summer evening towards sunset, and a Winter morning.

Unless you have a colour matched screen, samples are going to look different on there. Also physical samples will look different under artificial lighting in a shop.

Thanks chaps. The colour of the rustoleum was perfect but I can’t find it in a Matt finish.

The colour of the undercoat dulux paint was perefect. The top coat that dulux do is gallant grey which looks to be too light.

I’m looking for a shade like the dark charcoal.

Best advice I can give you is go to dulux as they sell hammerite I think they’re part of the akzononbel family, and say you want the colour in a eggshell or satin finish and explain its for a garage door, but I guess they would sell you the satin in Metal Shield and you’ll pay £25 for it and you’ll be happy with it because it’s September and it’s getting colder by the day your wife’s getting sick of you spending money on making your garage door look like a chuffing Megatron.

How about "Lead Grey" from Dulux's Heritage range? You can get a colour chart sent to you from here: www.duluxtradepaintexpert.co.uk/products/literature (scroll about halfway down the page for the Heritage chart).

Personally, I use Dulux Trade Metalshield on garage doors. They do it in a gloss or satin finish.

Thought about vinyl wrapping yet? No idea how you'll get a metallic matt paint, but I do know that you can get appropriate vinyl wraps for cars like what you want
