Oil bottle burst all over the bottom of my tool box  (about time I cleaned it out anyway!)

Anyway I have a homebase across the road which only has 3 in 1 oil. Ok for tool sharpening?

Also what do people do for chisel caps, plane blades. I don't see them in any builders providers, screwfix etc.

I used 3 in 1 for a good many years until a Gasman left a tin of cutting oil on a job (new tin for every job), I've still got some of that left from about 1978.

Chisel caps fall off willy-nilly just for fun, I keep mine in a roll sans caps, my planes are stored side down on a bench or blade retracted if in a bag.

Thanks Ajay. The problems living in an apartment, just nowhere to store everything so things get put into boxes as much as possible.

I've used 3in1 before now but for many years I've used turps , and preferably proper turpentine rather than the substitute but anything light really . I've even used petrol once or twice when I'd left my turps can in the workshop or wherever .
I've got some nice little spring steel caps which stay on really well. I got them in a job lot of old tools and haven't seen anything like them so I try not to lose them. As ayjay says the plastic ones come off all the time and quickly disappear. I've never seen them sold on their own , not that I've actually looked , but making a cap out of gaffer tape used to be quite common.

3-1 is fine when using on an oil stone. I’ve a trend diamond stone and use water or lapping fluid.
I’m assuming it’s an oil stone you use?
