hi, ive heard that in 2010 all oil based paints will cease to be available being replaced with water based instead.
what im wondering is when covering previous oil based coatings would the water based undercoat take ok?
if not, what would be the correct way to repaint a previous glossed (oil base) door for e.g?  |

you will still get oil based paint go on dulux trade and put 2010 gloss.

I think the politicians have realised that the massive consumption of oil is giving Arab countries too much of an hold over the rest of the world, hence the move away from Oil based products, such as some paints and carrier bags and many items made from plastic.

The change in paint has been on the cards for a while, and is following on from printing and automotive industry which used waterbased products on the whole, or with less solvent additive present. This has been down to a European directive. From 2010 you will get products that have solvents in them but far lower VOC's than todays paints. Yes you will be able to put water based products over old legacy coatings as long as you follow the manufacturers directions, the biggest issue for me is going to be quality such as brush marks and lack of shine, but for water based products they do maintain their colours, have become harder wearing and have an easier clean up so its not all bad.

its not cos of the arabs guv... honest. Oil is traded in US dollars so it benefits the US in equal amounts; just not common knowledge.
removal of oil based paints is purely down to the tree huggers; car paints are all water based now too. |

The VOC's from paints contribute to a tiny percentage of emmited carbon..the paint industry admit it isnt going to impact on the ozone and global warming..but just need to be seen to do their bit by falling in line with the rest of Europe.

How can they make oil based paint if theres no oil? At the current rate, they think it will run out in 40 years. (unless some massive new oil reserves are found)
Also, does it not just make sense to have less solvents in the air

Hopefully water based paint will have evolved into something decent in 40 years time
They also have the option of synthetic oil and bio oils..most of the oil in oil based paint is naturally occuring oil anyway..linseed is a prime example.
They might need to look at a different form of thinners though as white spirit and turps substitute is a by product of petrol..
In 40 years time you may also find spirit based paints like zinseer play a bigger part in the industry
