HI Alll im new here so please bare with me,

Today i tried very hard to change my inlaws light switch in there living room to a single switch they had 2 sets of lights in the livingroom, however i hit a snag, one set of wires have Red and Black, the other set of wires for the other lights just has 1 red cable,

I managed to get the working together however when the switch is turned off one set of lights remain on, any suggestions on what i can do?

:welcomeuhm: you could start by giving a better explanation..did you have a double gang switch with each of the two lights being operated seperately??

Or a single gang with 2 way switching to both lights??

Or as above with one way switching?

which core has been connected to which terminal at the switch???.

Do you have earths at the switch?

photos, if you can would be a bonus!

Hi there,

Sorry if my first post was alittle vague but ill try to explain alittle better, they previously had a Double Dimmer Switch, i have currently changed it to a single switch operating both lights, its currently wired 1 gang 1 way as i thought this would be the best solution as it only has 1 Black Cable the there is earth cable which is connected.

I have attached the way i have it wired as an image i hope this gives a better understanding of what ive done. A i say its on a single switch one set of lights work the way they should, the other stays on permenantly regardless of the position of the switch.

Many Thanks

one of the reds is a live and the other is a switch wire.

all you need do is this: -

from the cable that is a twin & earth, take the red form that to the common (L1)

the other red that is on it's own goes into L2 with the black. then put some red tape on the black cable.
