slightly off the thread but a neighbour lady I know owns a house that is rented and it was broken into. The tenants phoned the police who got a local firm to secure the busted window. my neighbour asked me to pop round and fix the hinge on the window. The company had tried siliconing the ply to secure the window but the ply was miles away from the frame, just a little tickle and the bugger came free. I knew she is expecting a bill of £300+ for the firm to have secured her building but the villiage idiot could have got in but what can you do?

I was no-where near it at the time

Thanks for the replies gents, much appreciated and I'll be calling trading standards tomorrow. I've called her insurance for her and she's making a claim.

Job and Knock - The whole new roof blew off as a large timber framed section, it looked pretty good otherwise but it seemed to me that there weren't enough not resisting anchors...but I honestly don't have the experience to tell.

I'm an engineer but have very little experience of designing domestic structures. To me it seems obvious that no calc's (or crap calc's) were done or if they were they weren't followed....

Thanks again!

A bit late replying, I know, but if the timber structure blew off then either it wasn't properly secured to the wall plates (I hormally cross angle nail from both sides), or more likely there weren't sufficient straps attaching the wall plates to the walls. I'm in the habit of using 1 metre long wall plates with at least four 3in screws (often more) to attach the straps to the wall and of having my straps ideally at no more than 2 metre centres. On higher buildings the recommendation is for straps at even closer centres. The wall plates must exceed 3 metres in length (this is a regulation, although in practice it isn't always feasible) and be jointed using half laps, not butted (again a regulation). You'd be surprised at how many corners roofers cut where they don't think it will be seen.......
