Loose pin hinge
Loose pin hinges are made from steel and can be found in several finishes. There is electro brassed finish ( as in this picture ), Zinc plated or plain steel. These hinges are better if they either have the zinc plating or the electro brass plating to help resist corrosion. Loose pin hinges are normally only used on light internal doors and offer the advantage that you do not need to remove the hinge to remove the door as the pin can be pushed out with a screwdriver. This is of great advantage when for example new carpets are fitted and the door requires planing. |

Rising butt hinge
Rising Butt hinges are often used so that the bottom of the door does not require trimming off where there is a carpet as the door rises when the door is being opened. These are available in three inch or four inch versions and can be self coloured or electro brassed. Care must be taken when purchasing them as they come in both left and right handed sets and so you must get the correct set for either a left hand or right hand hung door. |

Band and gudgeon
Band and gudgeon hinges or Hook and band hinges are often used on heavy gates, large barn doors or stable doors. They come is several different lengths and are often Galvanized or zinc plated to prevent rust. It is important to note that if you fit two of these and the hooks or gudgeons are pointing in the same direction it is possible to lift the door from the hinges and so if these are being used on a door that needs to be secure it is a good idea to have both hooks/gudgeons facing each other. |
