Mechanical and chemical methods can be used. Paint strippers will remove old paint as the name suggests, simply brush on, leave for the time specified by the manufacturer and scrape off. Gloves and goggles are essential, as the chemicals involved easily burn skin. |

There are products on the market that are designed to kill rust particles and transform them into a solid base. These are simple to use, most simply brush on.Some paints are designed specifically to be applied directly over rust, with additives in the paint that stop any further oxides forming.Wire brush are very useful for removing light rust, whether it be a hand brush or one mounted in a power drill or angle grinder. The angle grinder variety tend to be the most effective. It is essential to wear gloves and goggles when using a wire brush as dirt or loose bristles are easily flicked up towards your face.

Scraping will also remove some larger loose rust particles and paint, useful before going to work with a wire brush.
Sanding will also remove old paint and light rust, but it will take some time and often clogs the paper very quickly.
Shot blasting and sand blasting are professional services that can be carried out, they are very effective at removing rust and paint, taking the metal right back to the bare surface, as well as giving an even surface with an excellent key ready for painting. The only problem is the cost. I recently priced up for a garden gate to be sand blasted and it was £35.00. A brand new gate would not cost much more than this!
Especially effective on intricate and awkward pieces. Often the cost of blasting can be cheaper than purchasing several cans or paint stripper and rust killer chemicals.
